One Year…

52 weeks plus 1 day. 365 days. 8760 hours. 525600 minutes.
And 31,536,000 seconds.

After a rather strange phone call from my doctor to get my tail into emergency at a local hospital, I got my son to drive me there. It was a long night. And I woke up to the news that I had diabetes.

While it would be another 10 days (+/-) before I’d know if I was a Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic, Dec 3, 2022 was the day of the biggest change in my life.

I made it. That’s the most important thing to me.

I think I’m a bit unusual because I wasn’t showing symptoms/signs until I was over 60 years old.

Being a diabetic changed my physical side, for sure. But it also pounded the daylights out of my financial, career, social, familial, mental, and spiritual sides. I lost so much from all of these parts of my life. I won’t list the minutiae because that list would be meaningless to anyone else with this condition. It is so personal.

But I gained a lot too. Stronger boundaries. Clarified goals. More.

After one year I do believe I am a far better person than I was 366 days ago.

AND, much better at what I do.

And that is rather important.
